(On awareness, discomfort, and staying with what arises)

When Something Begins to Surface
There are moments where something rises into awareness
that you would usually move past more quickly.
A thought that lingers.
A reaction that feels stronger than expected.
A pattern that becomes difficult to ignore.
It may not be new.
But it is more visible than it was before.
And with that visibility
comes a kind of discomfort.
Not because something is wrong.
But because something is now seen
that was previously easier to move around.
The Instinct to Move Away
When something uncomfortable appears,
there is often an immediate instinct to shift away from it.
To distract.
To reframe.
To resolve.
To return to a version of yourself
that feels more steady.
This instinct is natural.
Because discomfort can feel like something that needs to be corrected.
Something to move through quickly
so you can return to normal.
But not everything that surfaces
is asking to be resolved immediately.
Some things are asking to be noticed.
What Shadow Actually Is
Shadow is not something separate from you.
It is not something you need to remove.
It is simply what has not yet been fully seen.
A pattern.
A response.
A belief.
A way of moving through the world
that becomes visible at a certain point in time.
Not because it has just appeared.
But because you are now able to recognise it.
Shadow is not the problem.
Avoidance is what creates distance.
Awareness is what creates understanding.
Signs You Are in a Shadow Season
You might notice:
A reaction that feels stronger than expected.
A pattern repeating in a way that is harder to ignore.
A thought or behaviour that brings discomfort when seen clearly.
There may be a sense of tension.
An awareness that something is present
that you would usually move past more quickly.
You may feel the urge to fix it.
Or to move away from it entirely.
But it continues to return.
Not to overwhelm you.
But to remain visible.
What to Do in Shadow
There is nothing you need to resolve immediately.
Nothing you need to correct in this moment.
Shadow is not asking for action.
It is asking for attention.
To stay with what is present
without rushing to change it.
To notice what arises
without attaching judgement.
To allow something to be seen
without needing to make it disappear.
This does not require intensity.
It requires steadiness.
A willingness to remain present
for a little longer than usual.
What Shadow Is Not
It can be easy to interpret this as something negative.
Something to fix or improve quickly.
But Shadow is not failure.
It is not something going wrong.
Not something that needs immediate correction.
It is a moment of visibility.
A point where something becomes clear
that was previously unnoticed.
And that clarity, even when uncomfortable,
is what allows change to happen naturally over time.
Staying With What Is Seen
You do not need to resolve everything you notice.
You do not need to move past it immediately.
You do not need to become a different version of yourself
to avoid what has surfaced.
You are allowed to remain here.
To see clearly
without needing to act quickly.
Because awareness, when held steadily,
begins to shift things without force.
Not all at once.
But enough.
